The easiest way to create a new project is to use the New Project wizard. Use the menu command File > New Project wizard to open the wizard. The wizard prompts you to enter the required details in the dialog box and then create the project. In addition to the station, CPU, program folder, source folder, block folder and OB1, you can also select an existing OB1 for error and alarm handling.

Create an instance of a new project through the wizard.

Create a project manually

You can create a new project in the SIMATIC Manager using the menu command File > New. It already contains the "MPI Subnet" object.

Other steps

When editing a project, you are free to choose the order in which most tasks are executed. Once you have created your project, you can choose one of the following methods:

  • First configure the hardware and then create software for it, or

  • First create software that is independent of all configured hardware.

Method 1: First configure the hardware

If you wish to configure the hardware first, you can perform the operation as described in Volume 2 of the "Configuring the Hardware Manual with STEP 7". When this is done, the "S7 Program" and "M7 Programs" folders required to create the software have been inserted. Then continue to insert the objects needed to create the program. Then create the software for the programmable module.

Method 2: Create the software first

It is also possible to create software without first having to configure the hardware; the hardware can be configured later. It is not necessary to set the hardware structure of the station in order to input the program.

The basic steps are as follows:

  1. Insert the required software folder in the project without the S7/M7 program of the station or CPU).
Here, you can easily determine if the program folder contains S7 hardware or M7 hardware.

  2. Then create the software for the programmable module.

  3. Configure the hardware.

  4. Once the hardware is configured, the M7 or S7 program can be linked to the CPU.
