Ginner Research Director Xiang Binbin: Internet of Things - the key factor driving digital business value

Nowadays, the era of the Internet of Everything has arrived, and the Internet of Things has entered people's daily lives. Large to smart cities, unmanned shops, small smart bracelets, intelligent temperature control devices, the Internet of Things not only brings good prospects in the industry, but also brings many conveniences in life. Relevant data show that by 2020, the global installed capacity of IoT equipment is expected to exceed 18.9 billion, and the future will be a world surrounded by IoT devices. On May 17, Gartner Research Director Xiang Binbin shared his views on the status quo and future development trends of the Internet of Things market with the theme of “Internet of Things – a key factor driving digital business value”.

Ginner Research Director Xiang Binbin: Internet of Things - the key factor driving digital business value

Gartner Research Director Xiang Binbin

According to Gartner's survey of more than 700 companies that have deployed IoT solutions around the world, after deploying IoT solutions, the value and benefits of enterprise business are more reflected in how to cut costs and expenses, followed by Increased revenue from core business, including customer data to generate new revenue and enhance user experience.

Xiang Binbin believes that for enterprises, deploying the Internet of Things to be linked to the digital business of enterprises will bring greater value to enterprises. At present, the enterprise digital strategy mainly involves two aspects: digital business optimization and digital business transformation. Optimization means focusing on what the company is doing now, thinking about how to do it better, and transforming more is doing what the company can't do now, including business models, operating models, or new businesses. New products or new services. The Internet of Things can support enterprise digital business optimization and digital business transformation to a large extent.

The main feature of the IoT market is that the platform of the segmentation platform should be open and flexible.

At present, the Internet of Things market is still a relatively immature market, and the known Internet of Things technology is actually in the stage of maturity. Xiang Binbin said: "In addition to the immature technology, the main feature of the Internet of Things market is its segmentation. In the industrial, commercial, and consumer sub-markets, Gartner IoT market research can be subdivided into 20 industries. 163 application scenarios. The biggest problem caused by segmentation is that due to the difference in scenes, the ability of 'thing' itself, different scene data, and communication mechanisms with the background will be very different."

According to Xiang Binbin, the deployment of the Internet of Things is divided into five stages: start-up, exploration, definition, integration, and optimization. At present, most of the enterprises that have deployed the Internet of Things are in the first phase. The work done at this stage is mainly network connection.

When talking about the problems that enterprises should pay attention to when deploying the Internet of Things, Xiang Binbin said: "When enterprises deploy, they must deploy a relatively flexible architecture. It cannot be said that only a fixed architecture is deployed for this application scenario. This will make it difficult to connect with other platforms in the future. If the ultimate goal is integration and scale deployment, the platform needs to be more open and flexible at the device, communication, information, functional and processing layers. To meet the needs of supporting more terminal types in the process of scenario expansion in the future."

The primary factor in the success of the IoT deployment is that the security industry should face this challenge together.

In a recent survey by Gartner's CEB, nearly 20% of organizations have observed at least one IoT-based attack in the past three years. In response to these threats, Gartner predicts that global IoT security spending will reach $1.5 billion in 2018, an increase of 28% from $1.2 billion in 2017 and $3.1 billion in 2021.

In this sharing, Xiang Binbin also mentioned that according to Garnter's corporate research, the key factor affecting the deployment of the Internet of Things is “safety”. "The challenge of security is always there. As the application of the Internet of Things is deployed, new problems will continue to emerge."

According to Xiang Binbin, security issues involve not only technical issues, but also a series of issues such as processes and rules. "There are a lot of security risks in the Internet of Things from the edge. The number of new Internet access terminals is increasing, and these terminals are not as different as traditional, relatively mature PCs and mobile phones, but they are very different. For example, A small sensor, which is very light in itself, does not have a strong processing power to load a particularly complex security software, which makes it virtually a security hazard. Some manufacturers who make sensors or embedded software want to appear in the market quickly. And because of cost considerations, security is not taken into consideration, which leads to security risks. Therefore, the entire industry needs to work from software, hardware to communication, to front-end chips, and everyone can work together to solve security problems."

Chinese manufacturers are good at discovering that the scene of landing is good at "from one to many"

It is reported that in terms of the trend of Internet of Things technology, there is no big difference between China and the world, but there are some differences in landing and application. Chinese manufacturers are not good at "from zero to one", that is, they are not good at creating a new thing completely, but Chinese manufacturers are good at "doing a lot from one." Therefore, the degree of enrichment of IoT applications in China may be higher than in foreign countries. According to some localization features of China, Chinese manufacturers will innovate different ways of using and applying. At the same time, Chinese manufacturers are also very good at discovering the scene of landing, and are good at putting mature technology to the application scene.

Xiang Binbin believes that China is a big manufacturing country, so many IoT terminals are produced in China, especially Chinese companies have strong capabilities in manufacturing modules and terminals. In addition, in China, Internet companies, traditional large IT companies and even small enterprises are all working on the development of the Internet of Things platform, which has reached several hundred. Although the Chinese Internet of Things industry may lag behind in core technology, from the perspective of the entire ecological chain, a relatively complete ecological chain has been formed end-to-end.
