Tucao wireless headphones, don't like to stop

Let's set the time dial back to 2014.

This year, the mainstream mobile phones are the iPhone 6, Galaxy S5, Xperia Z3 and HTC M8; this year, Luo Yonghao just released the Smartian T1; this year, Liu Zuohu also polished the waistline for the first time as a mobile phone; this year, 3.5 The mm interface has not been rejected by mobile phone manufacturers.

It took two years to ship the first fully wireless headset

At that time, no one thought that the 3.5 mm interface, which has been in the industry for decades, would be expelled from mobile phones in a few years. As this trend intensifies, things that were once familiar are becoming unfamiliar in our eyes. It is difficult to say whether removing this interface is the right direction, but the new design will inevitably bring pains, after all, the user's demand for multimedia will not disappear. , When you can’t find a working earphone a few years later, maybe you can’t help but spit out a dirty word in your mouth.

At that time, a team from Germany seemed to have smelled something different. In February 2014, the Bragi team launched a new project on the crowdfunding website Kickstarter, and the first truly wireless headset The Dash was born. Two Bluetooth headsets with absolutely independent cavities make wire troubles a history. There is no need to find a remote control by feeling, and the integrated touch function also makes the operation more intuitive.

Of course, what I get rid of at the same time is the feeling that the wire sticks to the neck after being soaked in sweat in the hot summer.

But the first crab-eating is always accompanied by great risks. The Dash, which was originally scheduled to be shipped at the end of 2014, encountered layers of resistance in the product definition, and the shipping time also bounced repeatedly. It was not officially officially until 2016. Shipment, two years of waiting, if it weren't for the high hopes for this type of product, I'm afraid the day lily would be cold.

But after that, all-wireless headphones are springing up like bamboo shoots after a rain, blooming everywhere.

As we see now, after Bragi, there are Apple’s AirPods, Sony’s “noise reduction beans”, Bose’s SoundSport Free, B&O’s Beoplay E8, and then to Jabra, JBL, Pioneer, Shinco and even Meizu. If you go out and ask, there are dozens, perhaps hundreds, of similar products on the market today.

After a large number of products are on the market, all-wireless headsets seem to have become an explosion on the market. On the one hand, mobile phone brands are accelerating the elimination of 3.5 mm interfaces, and on the other hand, audio manufacturers are accelerating the acquisition of users. But the same suspicion followed. People's biggest concern for all-wireless headphones is the stability and delay of the connection, and this point is also felt after they get the product.

The biggest problem is connection stability and latency

For invisible things, humans often feel skeptical from the bottom of their hearts. From a consumer's point of view, wired is always more stable than wireless. However, upholding the trust in the development of modern science and technology, they still placed high expectations on the all-wireless headphones, but soon the cold water poured on their heads: early all-wireless earphones were severely disconnected from the left and right ears.

Because the point-to-point solution of the Bluetooth A2DP protocol cannot distribute an audio stream to two earplugs at the same time, there is a connection line between the left and right ears of the traditional Bluetooth headset. The natural solution is to synchronize the data of the left and right ear cavities through a wireless connection. Currently, the commonly used technologies are divided into two types.

The first is NXP's NFMI technology. This technology communicates by coupling a tight, low-power non-propagating electric field between two devices. The advantage of NFMI technology is that short-distance transmission is very power-saving. Low latency (30ms). At the same time, the human body has a very low radiation absorption rate of NFMI, and the signal will drop sharply after the transmission distance is exceeded, which also ensures the privacy problem, so it is widely used in all wireless headphones.

The second is the already mature Bluetooth technology. In addition to the Bluetooth connection with the mobile phone, Bluetooth technology is also used between the left and right ears. Those using this technology include Sony "Noise Cancelling Beans" and Gear IconX. The advantage is that the transmission rate can reach 3 Mbps, and the disadvantages are also obvious, including high delay (500ms-1s), which is easy to be interfered and absorbed by the human body.

To go to creative restaurants, you must be prepared to eat dark dishes. Early adopters are always sweet and accompanied by risks. A large number of user feedback makes manufacturers have to improve the stability of the left and right ear connections in the future.

Subsequently, Bragi improved the circuit board design and launched The Dash Pro with better stability. Many of the subsequent manufacturers also adopted dual antenna designs. The stability of the left and right ear connections of all-wireless headphones on the market has been significantly enhanced, but because The influence of electric wires and other equipment on the magnetic field is still relatively prone to intermittent phenomena when walking to an intersection.

Latency is another problem that is often criticized for all-wireless Bluetooth headsets. The most obvious manifestation is that the pictures and sounds of videos and games are out of sync:

I was playing with my mobile phone and eating chicken while wearing headphones. I only heard the sound after three or four shots, and the delay was too great.

The delay problem almost makes the product usability half-fold. After all, listening to music is a relatively independent scene. Without any reference, the delay problem is almost invisible, but you can't see station B? Can't see Douyin? Can't watch short Weibo videos? Can't play games? In these scenarios, some products have almost zero availability due to excessive delay.

However, it should be noted that the delay is related to the software and hardware debugging of the device itself and the protocol support. From the perspective of the protocol, because most of the current all-wireless headsets only support the SBC and AAC protocols, both in terms of sound quality and latency are not good. Traditional SBC connections generally have a latency of more than 150ms, and aptX's extended protocol aptx Low Latency can reduce this value to below 40ms. Although low latency is not guaranteed by supporting aptX, it is indeed easier to reduce latency.

But among all wireless headset products currently on the market, I have only seen NUFORCE Be Free 8. This product supports the aptX Low Latency protocol. The official claims to be able to reduce the delay below 40ms, and more products can only be helpless after connecting to mobile phones. The display SBC. In fact, through searching, you can also find that most people who are interested in this product are looking for low latency.

And this pot, I am afraid that it is more likely to be deducted from the chip manufacturer. Perhaps it is not that the manufacturer does not want to join the new agreement, but that there is no relevant support for mainstream chips. Fortunately, Qualcomm has launched a new low-power Bluetooth system-on-chip (SoC) QCC5100 series a few days ago, which supports the aptX HD protocol, hybrid active noise reduction technology and voice assistant. I believe that the launch of this chip will give birth to a new batch of new ones. A generation of fully wireless headsets, and today's advanced features will also become standard with chip support.

There is also good news that QCC5100 is said to reduce power consumption by 65%, and a single long battery life is not a dream.
