Friendship and progress: China Optoelectronics Daniel Dialogue President of Hamamatsu Corporation

"Hamatsu is an old friend to me." The white-haired Mr. Zhou Liwei used this phrase to open a dialogue around China's optoelectronic technology development, cooperation and cooperation.

On April 28, 2017, at the invitation of President Ma Ming, President of Hamamatsu, five special guests from China's photovoltaic industry visited the Beijing Global Trade Center and had an in-depth communication with President Hummer. The five guests are the academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the pioneer and founder of the wide beam electron optics theory, Mr. Zhou Liwei; the vice chairman of the China Optical Society, the professor of Beijing Institute of Technology, Mr. Ni Guoqiang; the vice chairman of the Near Infrared Spectrum Branch of the China Instrument and Control Society, Mr. Qi Shungli, Professor of China Agricultural University; Mr. Liu Jian, a researcher and doctoral supervisor of the Institute of Semiconductors of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; and Dr. Ji Rongzhen, who is a senior engineer and researcher of the Institute of Optoelectronics Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Laser Measurement Technology Laboratory).

Friendship on the photon avenue

At the beginning of the discussion, Zhou Lao talked about the first meeting of Hamamatsu at a photoelectric seminar in the UK in 1974. When talking about Mr. Hamamatsu, the president of President Hamamatsu, the old man said: "Mr. Hummerf has visited China many times. He is not only my friend but also a friend of the Chinese people. We are very familiar with Hamamatsu, and Hamamatsu has also helped the Chinese optoelectronics industry."

At the beginning of reform and opening up, China urgently needs to develop optoelectronic technology. The Ministry of Electronics Industry and the Ministry of Nuclear Industry proposed technology introduction and jointly led experts to conduct an investigation. But at the time, the world's cutting-edge technology for China was almost blocked, and the expert group was repeatedly hit in the US and Europe. Only Mr. Hummer Huifu, who was then president of Hamamatsu Corporation of Japan, warmly received them and opened up factory visits and technical exchanges. He believes that Hamamatsu, as a company that develops photonics technology, should help China promote the development and modernization of photonics technology. Since then, the friendship between Hamamatsu and China on the Guangzi Avenue has officially begun.

"More than 20 years ago, Mr. Lao Ma came to China to talk about 'photonics in the 21st century.' The concept of 'photonics' was very trendy for us at the time. We started out as 'OpTIcs'. At that time, Mr. Wang Dazhao Mr. Mother Guoguang and Mr. Jin Guojun told me after the visit to Hamamatsu that Hamamatsu called photonics as 'Photonics', which is still very advanced.” Zhou Lao continued, “The most important medium in the world is light, one It is electricity. The development prospects of light are endless."

Light: Key enabling technology

For the prospect of the development of photonics technology, President Ma Maming also expressed the same view, and he also explained to the experts his own understanding of the light industry:

"The light industry is different from other industries. The general industrial structure is in the form of a 'pyramid'. For example, cars, the top of the pyramid is automobile manufacturing, and the downwards are gradually spread from the system to the parts. The optical industry is in the form of an 'inverted pyramid'. Although the photovoltaic device itself is in a market segment with a limited share, the modules, systems and equipment used to form it are vast, and the optoelectronic devices are These industries play a central role, and their performance directly affects the quality of the upper products. Hamamatsu calls photonic technology "Key Enabling Technology"."

Light industry "inverted pyramid"

President Hummer introduced that large local traditional enterprises in Hamamatsu, such as Yamaha and Honda, have gradually shifted production abroad, while Hamamatsu hopes to help the region achieve industry through the industrial characteristics of the “inverted pyramid” of the light industry. Revitalization. We will integrate small enterprises that have lost market due to the transfer of traditional enterprises, guide them to transform and enter the industrial ecology related to the light industry, and establish a new industrial structure centered on photonic technology in Hamamatsu. And this is also the photon technology, this "key enabling technology" brings hope for regional development. Four years ago, Hamamatsu also co-published the Hamamatsu Photon Declaration with three universities in Hamamatsu City, aiming to make Hamamatsu City a world-class photonic frontier city.

The Call of China's Economy and People's Livelihood: New Optoelectronic Devices and Processes

In the discussion, Professor Ni Guoqiang introduced the development of optoelectronics from the aspects of intelligent manufacturing, ultra-microscopic imaging, visible light communication, third-generation semiconductor materials, and people's livelihood. Among them, the professor mentioned: “There was a media question that China’s major plans mentioned areas such as information technology, biotechnology, new energy, new materials, and smart manufacturing. There is no separate mention of optoelectronic technology. My answer is: Photoelectric technology is ubiquitous, and it is closely related to economic construction, technological development, and changing lifestyles of people."

In recent years, professors have actively promoted the concept of “people's livelihood optics” in China, which is different from the development of traditional disciplines. It combines the development of optics with the people's livelihood and the people's livelihood, and promotes and practices it through the “China Optoelectronic Industry Competition”. The tendency of the results of the competition is also very obvious. On the one hand, it supports China's high-end instrument manufacturing and the development of China's optoelectronic devices; on the other hand, it supports the development of optoelectronics related to people's livelihood, entertainment, environment and other people's livelihood. In order to respond to the call of China's economy and people's livelihood, new optoelectronic devices and processes are necessary.

President Hummer also said that Professor Ni’s introduction is similar to that of Hamamatsu’s current direction. For example, in the development of “Minsheng Optical”, Hamamatsu has invested heavily in semiconductor devices in addition to the traditional photomultiplier manufacturing technology. In research and development. At the same time, it also set up a special compound semiconductor factory, focusing on the development of compound semiconductors, especially the materials of infrared devices; on the one hand, it is focusing on the development of MOEMS technology, in order to obtain better micro devices.

Hamamatsu New Compound Semiconductor Factory Building Design

The fellow Liu Jian, Prof. Qi Shun Geng and Dr. Ji Rongzhen also exchanged ideas on the development of semiconductor materials, related applications in China, and the development of laser measurement systems. Among them, Dr. Liu and Dr. Ji affirmed the quality of Hamamatsu products and expressed communication and cooperation possibilities for future development. Professor Yan expressed his appreciation for Hamamatsu's investment in infrared device materials. Higher production levels facilitate further optimization of detector costs.

President Hummer expressed his admiration for the activeness of the experts in the industry, and expressed his gratitude to everyone for their recognition and trust. And hope to further establish friendly and intimate contact with the Chinese optoelectronics industry, and jointly promote the development of photonics technology and applications.

“Communication is very important,” Zhou Lao said happily. “Our predecessors, Mr. Wang Dazhao, Mr. Guo Guoguang and Mr. Jin Guofan, have a photo at the entrance of Hamamatsu. Many times we will take this photo out. At that time they Tell us that Hamamatsu’s trip is very impressive to them. I hope to strengthen cooperation with Hamamatsu and promote the development of photonics."
