3M new technology doubles green LED efficiency

High-tech LED compiled on November 24th news, 3M scientists released a color conversion technology that can double the efficiency of green LEDs. The US company says its technology can accelerate the use of LEDs in backlights and projectors.

Mainstream blue and green LEDs typically use gallium nitride materials, but the efficiency varies with wavelength. The performance of green LEDs lags behind other colors, so it is often necessary to use two green LEDs plus one red and one blue to create balanced RGB pixels.

High-performance green LEDs will reduce the number of LEDs in RGB devices while improving color, energy efficiency, heat dissipation and stability.

Compared to the use of GaN chip green LEDs, 3M's technical approach is achieved by coating color conversion materials on high-efficiency blue GaN LED chips. The 3M material absorbs blue light and then emits green light.

With blue LEDs supplied by OSRAM, it can emit up to 216 lumens of green light and achieve 181 lm/W efficiency at 350 mA/mm2.

“By applying 3M's physics and materials expertise, we have developed a new process and are protected by intellectual property to produce high precision, any color temperature, durability and color saturated LEDs. We believe this is a good "The solution to the limitations of traditional LEDs," said Steven Webster, vice president of R&D and technology commercialization at 3M's Display and Imaging Division.

Webster said that 3M has long been a leader in this field, and the company has developed a high-performance display film that makes LED backlights more efficient and reduces LED usage. The company uses LED light sources in the field of projectors. This technology was developed after 3M defined the specifications of the projection LED.

This conversion material is a quantum well structure, CdZnS, which is manufactured by MBE and can be converted to any wavelength.

Webster said that the effect of color conversion to amber is also good, but for current technology, green light has the most improved efficiency.

However, Webster did not comment on whether this technology could be used to make white light. In general, white light requires several wavelengths or a wide spectral output.

This color conversion material can be coated on a chip with a color conversion ratio of over 90%. Webster expects this new LED product to be in volume production in a year. Currently 3M is negotiating with LED manufacturers who don't want to produce LEDs themselves. (Compile: Zeng Cong)
