2.1.1 Configurable Logic Module (CLB)
Spartan-6 contains two SLICEs per CLB module. The CLB is connected to the external general logic array through the switch matrix, as shown in Figure 2-1 and Figure 2-2. The bottom SLICE is labeled SLICE0 and the top SLICE is labeled SLICE1. The two SLICEs are not directly connected.
Each SLICE contains 4 LUTs and 8 storage units. These basic units provide logic and ROM functionality. Some SLICEs, called SLICEL, include arithmetic carry chains and multiplexers in addition to logic and ROM functions. SLICEM includes a carry chain, a multiplexer, a lookup table LUT, and a variable length shift register.
In Spartan-6, about 50% of SLICE is SLICEX, it does not have storage function, and there is no carry chain; 25% is SLICEL, it does not have storage function, but contains carry chain; the remaining 25% is SLICEM, It has a store/shift register function and also includes a carry chain. Note that XC6SLX4 does not contain SLICEL.
The functions of all CLBs are the same and can be configured in Table 2-2.
Each CLB SLICE contains resources such as logic function generators, memory elements, multi-function multiplexers, bit logic, and arithmetic logic units (MULT_AND), which are described below.
